German federal election 2025 - statistics & facts
The center-right CDU party won the German Federal Election of 2025, winning 28.5 percent of the vote and an estimated 208 seats in the German Parliament (Bundestag). This election followed the collapse of the unpopular 鈥榯raffic light鈥 coalition government of the center-left SPD, the Greens, and liberal FDP at the end of 2024. After winning the election, the leader of the CDU, Friedrich Merz must now form his own coalition, although he has ruled out working with the hard-right AfD party who finished second in this election, and won in five out of Germany's 16 federal states.
