India’s retail inflation rate reached an eight-year low in July 2025, below the Reserve Bank of India’s tolerance band. This is expected to give policymakers more scope to cut interest rates if economic growth is impacted by surging U.S. tariffs. The fall in the inflation rate was driven by declining growth in food prices to its lowest level in 2017. Does this mean common households are feeling less pinched by inflation? While retail inflation has cooled, core inflation that excludes food and fuel remains stubborn, despite a slight dip from the previous month.
