The biographical film ‘Dangal’ continued to be the highest grossing Indian movie overseas as of May 2025, having generated nearly *** million U.S. dollars. Most of the top-grossing films on the list hailed from Bollywood and starred its biggest celebrities, namely, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, and Shah Rukh Khan.

Bollywood cinema

The term Bollywood refers to the Hindi film industry located in Mumbai, the movie metropolis formerly known as Bombay. While many movies follow similar plot patterns, Bollywood productions feature various genres. Baahubali 2- The Conclusion, originally a Telugu and Tamil film, was dubbed into other languages including Japanese, Russian, and Chinese due to its successful franchise. 

South Indian film market

Although Bollywood is associated with Indian films, it is important to note that Indian cinema spans across the country, with successful regional cinema as well. This combination places the Indian movie industry among the largest producers of films worldwide. Films in Telugu and Tamil are as popular as their Bollywood counterparts, often being dubbed for Hindi-speaking audiences. In fact, the South Indian film market has surpassed the Hindi market in terms of releases recently.
