The science fiction movie 2.0 was the all-time highest-budget movie in India with a production value of almost six billion Indian rupees. It was closely followed by RRR, a major production by Tollywood in South India. The budgets of each of these films outstripped their net gross earnings since their release.

A slow year for Indian films

The highest share of the Indian film industry's earnings came from domestic theatrical revenues, worth over 100 billion Indian rupees in 2024. However, the industry's overall revenue that year had fallen compared to the previous year. India saw far fewer releases featuring superstars such as Shah Rukh Khan that year. Apart from this, the steady competition from streaming platforms and a decline in movie theater attendance and ticket prices also resulted in a dip in film revenue.

Quality over quantity

Yet another contributing factor illustrated was the poor performance of big-budget films. Higher budgets do not necessarily mean profitable movies. Projects with smaller budgets have time and again raked in higher return on investments, than their big-budget rivals.
