In this study populism is defined as a certain understanding of politics and democracy, its norms, institutions and procedures. A distinguishing feature is the idea of the 鈥渢rue people鈥 on one side and the 鈥渃orrupt elite鈥 on the other. Additionally, views which are anti-establishment, anti-pluralism and pro sovereignty of the people. According to the authors of the study, all three views are supposed to be represented simultaneously to qualify as populist views. Further definitions are available in the report.

This statistic shows the results of a survey on the distribution of populism amongst eligible voters in Germany in 2020 by school leaving qualification. In accordance with the definition provided by the study, ** percent of eligible voters who at most held a German Hauptschulabschluss were classified as populist. By comparison, **** percent of respondents who had a minimum German Abitur or Fachabitur were classified as populist.
