This statistic shows the distribution of total retail payment transactions in the Netherlands from 2006 to 2017, by payment method used. Debit cards were widely used, reaching a market share of ** percent in 2017. In 2017, there were approximately *** million debit cards in the Netherlands. Between 2006 and 2016, the total number of debit cards increased from **** million in 2006 to **** million in 2016. In this same period, though, Dutch consumers increasingly paid for their purchases by debit card as the volume of debit card payment transactions increased every passing year.

Within Europe there is a lot of diversity when it comes to the use of payment methods. Every country has its own way of paying money, with credit/debit cards, checks, mobile apps, NFC (Near-Field Communication, or contactless payments) and digital wallets being the most well-known digital payments methods in Europe.
