The source added the following information for methodology. 'Pay quartiles are calculated by splitting all employees in an organization into four even groups according to their level of pay. Looking at the proportion of women in each quartile gives an indication of women's representation at different levels of the organization.'

Fourth quartile = lowest paid; First/top quartile= highest paid.

This statistic shows the distribution of women and men employed at leading apparel retailers in the top pay quartile in the United Kingdom (UK) as of April 2018. Of the leading retailers, Debenhams had the highest share women in the top pay quartile, at ** percent. Sports Direct, Tesco, JD Sports and Asda are the four retailers which have fewer women than men in the highest pay quartile, with shares of **** percent, **** percent, **** percent and **** percent, respectively .
Since retail is a female dominated industry, there tends to be a higher share of women in higher paid positions than in other industries such as finance and insurance, and the professional, scientific and technical sectors. In some of the UK's largest banks, the share of women in the top pay quartile is as low as ** percent.
