'The median hourly rate is calculated by ranking all employees from the highest paid to the lowest paid, and taking the hourly wage of the person in the middle; so the median gender pay gap is the difference between women’s median hourly wage (the middle paid woman) and men’s median hourly wage (the middle paid man).'

This statistic shows the median pay gap between women and men in the leading apparel retailers in the United Kingdom (UK) as of April 2018. Of the leading companies, TJX UK, which trades under 'TK Maxx', has the highest median gender pay gap, at *** percent. This means that when comparing median hourly rates, women earn ** pence for every one British pound earned by men. In comparison, Debenmas, Primark and Sports Direct reported that median hourly rates in the company were at the same level between women and men.
Since retail is a female dominated industry, gendered differences in pay tend to smaller than those seen in other industries, such as finance and insurance, and the professional, scientific and technical sectors. In some of the UK's largest banks, median gender pay gaps are as high as **** percent.
