When asked what should happen to the traditional look of Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) in 2021, about a third of Dutch people surveyed stated that it should be adapted. Since 2017, more people have started to feel that this traditional look needs to be adjusted. Zwarte Piet is the fictional aid of Sinterklaas, a local variation of Santa Claus in the Netherlands and Belgium. Due to his traditional black appearance, it has been publicly discussed in those countries whether Zwarte Piet should change its appearance.
