Christmas shopping in the United Kingdom (UK) - statistics & facts
The Christmas season in the United Kingdom is an exciting time not just for people celebrating, gathering with loved ones, and eating good food, but also for retailers. Sales figures peak during this period, with a significantly greater volume of retail goods sold in the United Kingdom in December than in any other month. The total value of seasonal sales in the United Kingdom was forecast to reach approximately 91 billion British pounds in 2025, which was an increase of nearly three billion pounds from the previous year. Nevertheless, these forecast sales figures for the United Kingdom ranked the highest in Europe, with expected sales worth roughly 16 billion pounds more than those in second-placed Germany.
What will consumers buy as Christmas gifts?
One of the British consumers’ biggest expenditures during the Christmas period is gifts. In particular, Brits generally buy gifts for their children or partners. Beauty products, apparel, and footwear are among the most popular gifts in the country. However, as the UK has only recently recovered from a period of elevated inflation, many shoppers remain concerned about their financial situation. As a result, most reported that they plan to change their gift-giving habits in 2025, such as prioritizing gifts for close family and friends only.
Where will consumers buy their gifts?
The majority of Christmas retail sales are still done in-store. In 2025, this channel was forecast to generate over 57 billion British pounds, roughly 23 billion pounds more than online sales. According to a 2025 survey, consumers' favorite purchase channels for Christmas gifts, other than online stores, were specialty stores such as jewelry stores, toy stores, electronics stores, and apparel stores, with more than half of consumers shopping at these locations.
