The amount of primary energy consumed in Italy was **** exajoules in 2023. A decreasing trend can be observed in the energy consumption in the country, especially concerning oil, solid fuels, and electricity imported to the country. 

Energy consumption by sector

In 2022, the transportation sector was the leading energy consumer in Italy, at over ** million metric tons of oil equivalent, accounting for a large share of non-electrical energy consumption. The residential sector ranked second that year.
