Energy sector in Spain - statistics & facts
Spain’s energy sector is in the midst of a transition, with renewables experiencing a trend of rapid growth. The country ranks among the leading renewable energy consumers worldwide, having used more than 1.4 exajoules of renewable energy in 2023. However, Spain still sources approximately 66 percent of its primary energy from fossil fuels, the majority of which are imported from overseas. Spain’s dependency rate on energy imports stood at roughly 68 percent in 2023, meaning that the country imported over two-thirds of the total primary energy consumed, while only 32 percent came from domestic sources.
