The Netherlands is one of the leading nations in the European Union in the switch to zero-emission vehicles. In the Benelux region, the Netherlands leads with the most battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations with over ** units in 2023. To encourage the switch to zero-emission vehicles, the Netherlands has developed the infrastructure to accommodate the rising demand for electric vehicles.

Types of electric vehicles

Amongst the types of electric passenger cars available in the Netherlands, battery-electric vehicles were the most popular option with nearly ** in circulation as of July 2024. While plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) had over ** registrations, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) played an insignificant role with just *** vehicles in the fleet.

Tesla leads the market

In 2023, the best-selling car model in the Netherlands was a fully electric vehicle: nearly * Tesla Model Y were sold in the country, over sales above the volume of new Kia Picanto registrations. The Kia model, which offers a petrol or liquefied petroleum gas powertrain in its third generation, was second in the ranking. Tesla was the electric vehicle market leader in the Netherlands, and the only brand to hold over ** percent of the EV market in the country. Aside from Kia, all other brands in the top five were European.
