On June 23, 2016 the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in the Brexit referendum. Approximately 33.56 million people took part in the vote, with 17.4 million people voting to Leave, and 16.1 million voting to Remain, a difference of around 1.27 million votes. As a percentage of votes this meant that Leave had a slight majority of 51.9 percent, to Remain's 48.1 percent.
