Car sales of the German automaker Volkswagen in Italy declined from ** in 2011 to ** units in 2013 before increasing in the following years, reaching ** units in 2019. The year 2020 saw Volkswagen sales drop once more, however, by over ** percent, reaching ** units for the year. Compared to other German car producers, Volkswagen performed better in Italy in 2020.
German producers
Other German competitors such as Audi, BMW, and Porsche experienced a similar trend in 2020. Audi car sales in Italy reached almost * units, a decrease of over ** percent compared to the previous year. A similar albeit not as dramatic downward trend in sales can be noticed regarding Porsche car sales in Italy, which reached units in 2020.
Private vehicles
As reported in a recent survey, Italian are beginning to consider alternative types of vehicles. In 2018 it was found that ** percent of the respondents were considering purchasing a compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquified petroleum gas (LPG) vehicle, while **** percent were considering purchasing an electric car.
