Retail e-commerce is a booming industry in the U.S. Online sales have constantly grown since 2013, showing aggressive projections until 2020. Between 2015 and 2020, the retail e-commerce market is forecast to double in size. Holiday season is a profitable period for retailers, especially for retail e-commerce. Since 2012, about a quarter of the total retail e-commerce revenue has been generated during holiday season. Amazon, Walmart, Target and BestBuy are the most visited retail website in the U.S. during holiday season. Amazon is, by far, the most popular online retail site, accounting for about ** percent of all online retail site visits in December of 2015. Walmart was a distant second during that holiday season with *** percent of the share, followed by Target with around percent.

In the U.S., Christmas is the most profitable holiday for the e-commerce industry. In 2015, about **** billion U.S. dollars were spent on e-commerce, a figure slightly higher than the previous year, when about ** billion U.S. dollars were spent. In comparison, online sales on Thanksgiving Day amounted about *** billion U.S. dollars in revenue in 2015, whereas about *** billion U.S. dollars were spent on e-commerce during Cyber Monday that year. In regards to e-commerce spending, Cyber Monday registered the highest year-on-year growth amongst all holidays in 2015. E-commerce spending during Cyber Monday increased by ** percent in comparison to 2014; e-commerce sales growth of other holiday varied between *** and ** percent during that period. Cyber Monday was also the highest U.S. e-commerce spending days during the 2015 holiday season, as more than *** billion U.S. dollars were spent on e-commerce that day.
