In the European Union, it was found that men living in the lowest income quintile were five times more likely to be living with depression compared to the highest income quintile. For women in the lowest income quintile, the prevalence of depression was four times higher than those in the highest income quintile. In Bulgaria, Austria, and Estonia, rates of depression were at least 30 times higher among men in the lowest income quintile compared to those in the highest income quintile.
