The National Substance Use and Mental Health Service Survey (N-SUMHSS) replaced the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS) and the National Mental Health Services Survey (N-MHSS) in 2021 by combining questions for substance use and mental health facilities.
*There were 27,957 SU and MH treatment facilities known to SAMHSA in the U.S. in 2024, of which 4,009 were found to be either closed or ineligible for the N-SUMHSS. Out of 23,948 facilities eligible for the 2024 N-SUMHSS, 85.7% (n = 17,829) facilities provided SU treatment, 86.9% (n = 15,421) facilities provided MH treatment, and 87.7% (n = 9,302) facilities provided both SU and MH treatment.
Of the 23,948 facilities eligible to participate in the N-SUMHSS, this report includes data and findings from 21,205 facilities who responded to the survey. These facilities are composed of 15,953 SU facilities (89.5% of 17,829 eligible SU facilities), 14,091 MH facilities (91.4% of 15,421 eligible MH facilities), and 8,839 SU/MH facilities (95% of 9,302 eligible SU/MH facilities).

Number of facilities sums to more than the total column because a facility could offer mental health treatment in more than one service setting.

Citation formats

As of 2024, there were 15,421 mental health treatment facilities in the U.S., of which, 14,091 completed the N-SUMHSS* survey. Within those, 12,015 were outpatient facilities while 2,460 facilities were residential and 1,288 facilities were hospital inpatient facilities. Mental health treatment facilities are instrumental in helping those suffering from acute or chronic mental health issues get care in a safe and secure environment.

U.S. Mental health facilities

Inpatient mental health treatment may be needed for those that are a danger to themselves or others, those using drugs, those that need to be stabilized or those that are experiencing psychosis. The top hospitals in the U.S. for adult psychiatry include McLean Hospital in Massachusetts and Massachusetts General Hospital. Few mental health treatment facilities offered treatment programs specific client groups, with just a third offering such to LGBTQ clients.

Mental health in the U.S.

Mental illness can affect anyone of any age; however, some groups experience more mental illness than others. It is estimated that up to one quarter of the U.S. adult population face some mental illness, with women suffering more than men. A recent survey also demonstrated that Utah, Oregon, and District of Columbia had the highest percentage of people that described their mental health as poor. Other mental health variables can compound one another. For example, mental illness and substance use can be especially difficult to diagnose and treat.
