As of July 20, 2026, there have been over 2,400 confirmed cases of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the DR Congo, with 967 confirmed deaths. The current outbreak has caused considerable global unease and was listed as a public health emergency of international concern by the WHO. The Director-General of the WHO visited the DR Congo on May 28. While no vaccine currently exists for the Bundibugyo virus, there had been some initial hope that the fatality rate from this strain of Ebola is lower than other species of the disease.Â
The disease spreads between people through direct contact with infected individuals’ bodily fluids, including blood, secretions, and organs, particularly through broken skin or mucous membranes. Contaminated surfaces, such as bedding, can also facilitate transmission, increasing the risk of spread in healthcare settings with inadequate infection prevention and control measures.
