A confirmed cases defined by the ECDC is "A person with a laboratory-confirmed monkeypox infection with either - monkeypox virus specific PCR assay positive result or - orthopoxvirus specific PCR assay positive result which is then confirmed by nucleotide sequence determination of the detected virus as MPXV with symptom onset since March 1, 2022."

Confirmed mpox cases in Europe as of July 2024, by age and gender
As of July 5, 2024, the overwhelming majority of mpox cases in Europe had been recorded among men. Over 10.6 thousand cases had been reported among men aged between 31 and 40 years of age, compared to 127 among women of the same age. In August 2024, the outbreak of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) was declared once again to be a public health emergency by the World Health Organization, having been first declared one in July 2022.
