The number of Basque speakers in the Northern Basque Country has decreased between 1996 and 2021, dropping from 56,200 to 51,500 over 25 years. Despite a slight increase in the number of Basque speakers between 2011 and 2021, the share of the population speaking Basque continues to decline because the population of this area is growing faster than the number of Basque speakers.
