This statistic shows the number of candidates who took the TOPIK exam worldwide between 1997 and 2022. The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) is the Korean language exam. Over the entire measured period, the number of people taking an exam to learn Korean increased by more than 100 times. This surge is explained by the development of the "hallyu," the Korean wave, at the heart of Korea's soft-power strategy. The growing success of Korean popular culture internationally (K-pop, dramas, films, cuisine...) has thus popularized the learning of Korean worldwide.
