Despite the good audience figures recorded by the Aragonese network (Aragón TV) and the Galician channel in the last year, TV3 remains the most-watched regional channel in Spain, with a market share of 13.7 percent in 2024. This figure is largely due to its dominance within Catalonia's own regional television. Although the regional offer consists of a total of six channels, TV3 is the one to which viewers in Catalonia dedicate the most daily time. Specifically, each person watched content broadcast by TV3 for an average of approximately 20 minutes per day in 2023. Indeed, the channel has been characterized in recent years by the broadcast of high-quality fiction series that have ended up crossing borders, such as ²Ñ±ð°ù±ôÃ. It is therefore not surprising that the Spanish Academy of Television Sciences and Arts has recognized it on several occasions.
The profile of the regional television consumer in Spain
The consumption of regional channels seems to be more predominant in the regions located in the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula, with market shares above 8 percent. This reality is not surprising considering that Catalan and Basque television were, precisely, the first regional channels to be established in Spain at the beginning of the 1980s. However, regardless of geographical location, their audience is dominated by the population over 64 years old, largely retirees or adult couples without children.
Advertising and Spanish regional television
Streaming platforms may have wreaked havoc on fiction series from major national and regional networks, but it seems that, at least for now, traditional television can still count on advertising support. In 2024, the advertising industry's investment in television commercials was 1.768 billion U.S. dollars. This investment very likely did not overlook regional channels, considering the data from the previous year. In fact, the revenues of the main public regional television entities together approached 102 million U.S. dollars in 2023. While much of these channels' budgets come from regional governments, advertising has become a key factor for their survival in recent years.
