The abstention rate in the second round of the presidential elections reached 28 percent in 2022, close to the record of the 1969 presidential elections, where 31 percent of French voters did not go to vote.
This abstention rate is slightly higher than in the first round of the presidential elections, where 26.3 percent of French voters did not vote.
While the high abstention rate is significant, it should not overshadow the substantial level of blank and null votes which, although they do not affect the election result, also indicate the large portion of French citizens who refused to choose between the two finalists of the presidential election. With 8.6 percent of the ballots, this protest vote remains lower than the 2017 record of 12 percent, but it is twice as high as in the first round, where it was 4.57 percent.
