However, the adoption of online media as a shopping platform has not only resulted in the elimination of all physical locations. According to a recent study, in October 2014, 39 percent of respondents from the United States had searched for and purchased goods online, while only 21 percent indicated having searched online but purchased in-store. Only 7 percent had searched in-store before buying online.

In the fourth quarter of 2014, about 65 percent of Internet users in the United States had purchased a product online during the previous month. According to a recent study, mobile e-commerce spending in the first quarter of 2015 reached 11.1 billion U.S. dollars in sales, representing about 15 percent of total U.S. retail e-commerce sales. The most purchased product category online using a mobile device is digital content, such as apps and games, with smartphone commerce accounting for 16.7 percent of sales in this sector. Americans also use their phones to buy event tickets, jewelry and watches, or household and gardening products.
