As of 2024, five bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) facilities were reported to be operational worldwide, with a combined carbon capture capacity of approximately 1.98 million metric tons per year. Of this total, 0.6 million metric tons per year are stored through enhanced oil recovery, where CO2 is injected into oil fields to boost extraction. The remaining 1.38 million metric tons per year are stored utilizing deep saline formations as a permanent geological storage option for the captured CO2 produced during bioenergy production.
