As of 2024, there were a total of five bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) facilities reportedly operating around the world. These facilities capture CO₂ produced from bioenergy processes (such as ethanol fermentation) and then store it underground using one of two methods. Two facilities operate by storing CO₂ through enhanced oil recovery by injecting it into oil fields to subsequently boost extraction, and three facilities operate using deep saline formations, where CO₂ is permanently stored in underground saltwater-bearing rock layers.
