A cohabiting partner is a partner the person lives with or lived with at some point, in a married or de facto relationship.

Partner violence describes any incident involving the happening, attempt or threat of sexual and/or physical assault. Partner emotional abuse can occur when a person is subjected to specific behaviors or actions which are aimed at preventing or controlling their own behavior, and thus causing emotional harm or fear. Partner economic abuse is defined as a person being subjected to specific behaviors or actions aimed at preventing or controlling their access to economic resources, and thus causing them emotional harm or fear.

The number of males/females who have experienced cohabiting partner violence, emotional abuse, or economic abuse since the age of 15 expressed as a percentage of all males/females aged 18 years and over.

Citation formats

As of financial year 2022, around 22.9 percent of women in Australia experienced emotional abuse since the age of 15 years. Compared to this, around 13.8 percent of Australian men had the same experience in the same period.
