To be classified as a victim of stalking in the Supplemental Victimization Survey, the respondent must have experienced a repeated course of conduct that either caused them substantial emotional distress or to fear for their safety or the safety of someone they know or would cause a reasonable person to fear for their safety or the safety of someone they know.
More than one type of stalking behavior was possible.

In 2016, about ** percent of victims of stalking with technology in the United States were subjected by their stalkers to unwanted calls, voice messages, text messages, etc. to excessively contact victim. A further ** percent of victims received unwanted emails or messages from their stalker through social media.
