Of the respondents who said they are currently applying for or considering work as a GP in the UK: (49%, or 208 of 424 respondents) and answered “yes” to “have you struggled to find an appropriate role?”

In 2024, among general practitioner (GP) trainees within two months of completing their training, half were still looking for a job in the UK*. Among them, ** percent said they struggled to find an appropriate role. The most common reason given was "I can't find a GP role in an area I want to work in". Another in *** GP trainees couldn't find a practice that could sponsor them for a visa. The average GP trainee applied to ** jobs.

International medical graduates who trained as a GP in the UK face the threat of deportation right after they received their certificate of completion of training (CCT). This is because a three-year GP training doesn't qualify them for indefinite leave to remain (which requires five years of working in the UK). Only since autumn 2023, are GP trainees now granted a four-month window to remain and look for work. However, they require a visa sponsorship, which not every GP practice has a license for.
