In 2024, among general practitioner (GP) trainees within two months of completing their training, only ** percent had secured a job in the UK*. Among them, even four in ten found job hunting to be moderately or very difficult.

International medical graduates who trained as a GP in the UK face the threat of deportation right after they received their certificate of completion of training (CCT). This is because a three-year GP training doesn't qualify them for indefinite leave to remain (which requires five years of working in the UK). Only since autumn 2023, are GP trainees now granted a four-month window to remain and look for work. However, they require a visa sponsorship, which not every GP practice has a license for.
