Bride price refers to the money or goods given to the family of a bride by the groom or his family. It is different from bride dowry, which serves as a gift from the bride’s family to the groom’s family.
The proportion of female respondents was high in this survey. Male respondents accounted for 38.3%. There were also more young respondents, with those born between 1990 and 1995 taking up for 33.4%, 22.7% for the birth year between 1996 and 1999, and 22.3% for those born after 2000. 30.2% of respondents lived in the first-tier cities, 39% in the second tier, 22% in the third and fourth tiers, and the rest in small towns or villages.
According to a survey released in April 2024, **** percent of respondents in China believed the bride price should be based on the financial conditions of both families. The value of the bride-wealth has become less of a concern as people's attitudes shift away from traditional thinking. *** percent of respondents preferred no bride price from the groom at all.
