Global rare earth element (REE) demand for clean technologies amounted to ** thousand metric tons in 2023. Under the Announced Pledge Scenario, the global demand for REEs for clean technology applications is projected to quadruple by 2040, to some ** thousand metric tons. As of 2023, China was the world's largest producer of REEs by a large margin.
REEs are a subset of critical minerals used in the production of key clean energy transition technologies including wind turbines, electric vehicles, solar panels, and energy storage systems.
