Definition: "Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) (2-h glucose 7.8–11.0 mol/L [140–199 mg/dL]) and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) (fasting glucose 6.1–6.9 mmol/L [110–125 mg/dL]), based on the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, are commonly used to define prediabetes."

In 2021, it was estimated that around 464 million adults worldwide aged 20 to 79 years had impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), while almost 300 million had impaired fasting glucose (IFG). IGT and IFG are commonly used to define prediabetes. The prevalence of both are expected to increase over the next couple of decades.
