Following the inaugural presidential debate of 2024, many Democrats across the country expressed disappointment in Biden's performance, arguing that he was no longer fit to serve as president. In the following weeks, Biden’s polling and campaign financing had fallen to record lows, forcing Biden and his aides to come to terms with the fact that his chances of winning the election were slim.

On July 21, he announced that he would step aside, endorsing Kamala Harris to take his place. Seeing as how the path forward remains uncharted territory, Americans are not certain exactly how this will impact the election in November. Just over half of Republicans think it strengthen's Trumps chances of winning, compared to 22 percent of surveyed Democrats.
