On June 30, 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that presidents have absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts falling within their exclusive sphere of constitutional authority.

The decision throws a wrench in Trump's federal election interference case and other impending court cases, as it must now be decided whether Trump has immunity for the three pending cases.

Regarding Trump's hush money convictions, it is now possible to argue that Trump's actions occurred after he was sworn in as president, rendering them invalid evidence. The New York hush money sentencing that was originally scheduled to take place on July 11 has now been delayed until at least September.

A poll conducted shortly after the ruling revealed that Americans were divided on the issue of presidential immunity, with just over a third of respondents agreeing that presidents should have legal immunity for official actions they took as president.
