In 2019, the global prevalence of anemia among children aged under five years was around 40 percent. This was a decrease from a prevalence of 48 percent in the year 2000. Risk factors for anemia among children include being born premature or with a low birth weight, living impoverished, a diet low in iron and other vitamins and minerals, and certain diseases and illnesses such as kidney disease, autoimmune diseases, and some cancers.
