In 2024, new HIV infections among children worldwide were linked to mothers not receiving antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy or breastfeeding, making it the leading cause of new HIV acquisitions among children. In Western and Central Africa alone, this accounted for infections, while in Eastern and Southern Africa, infections occurred because mothers acquired HIV during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
