Residential and commercial buildings were the largest source of GHG emissions in the U.S. in 2022 when electricity-related emissions are distributed among end-use sectors. This is due to the large share of electricity use in these sectors for heating, air conditioning, and other power hungry appliances.
In contrast, residential and commercial buildings accounted for roughly 13 percent of total U.S. GHG emissions in 2022 when emissions from electricity use are not allocated. Meanwhile, transportation becomes the biggest overall GHG emitter, with a share of roughly 30 percent of emissions.Â
