Based on emissions of the EU MRV fleet. EU-MRV is an EU regulation on the monitoring, reporting, and verification of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from maritime transport entering and leaving European Economic Area (EEA) ports when transporting goods or passengers for commercial purposes. For example, EU-MRV covers emissions from a ship that goes from Rotterdam to Shanghai and the emissions produced when a ship sails from Shanghai to Rotterdam. However, this excludes emissions if a ship makes a stop at another port outside the EEA for cargo or passenger operations. In this scenario, only emissions from the last leg will be reported.

As a consequence of the UK withdrawal from the EU, voyages between the UK and an EEA country are no longer considered intra-EEA voyages but rather extra-EEA voyages.

Citation formats

In 2021, the share of the EU MRV fleet's total CO₂ emissions from intra-EEA voyages (voyages between EEA countries) dropped to ** percent, compared to ** percent in 2020. This reduction was largely driven by the UK's withdrawal from the EU, as voyages between the UK and EEA countries are no longer considered intra-EEA voyages. Emissions at berth (where ships stay in ports) account for the smallest share of the fleet's emissions, and have remained stable since 2018.
