Global total carbon dioxide removal sales 2020-2025
Some ***million metric tons of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits had been sold worldwide as of July 2025. Global sales of CDR credits increased from just ****metric tons in January 2020 to approximately ** million metric tons by May 2024. Global CDR sales increased by some **** million metric tons that month, mainly due to Microsoft's record-breaking purchase of *** ³¾¾±±ô±ô¾±´Ç²ÔÌýCDR credits from Stockholm Exergi. There was also a significant jump in CDR purchases in May 2023, which was also a result of CDR purchases made by Microsoft.
Although CDR sales have risen considerably in recent years, they still only accounted for less than *** percent of the estimated ** billion metric tons that need to be removed annually from the atmosphere by 2050.
