As of 2023, the United States had a remaining carbon budget of about ** billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCOâ‚‚), in order to limit global warming to *** degrees Celsius. Nevertheless, emissions from hydrocarbons remaining in planned and active fields would outdo the North American country's carbon budget by nearly five-fold – with gas and oil emissions amounting to some ** and ** GtCOâ‚‚, respectively. The United States is by far the largest carbon budget overshooting country worldwide.
