The United States is the largest producer of emissions from oil use worldwide, having produced 2.25 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) in 2023. The U.S. has been the largest producer for many decades. The second-largest emitter of CO₂ from oil use is now China, which has seen a steep rise in emissions from this fuel since the 1990s.
