Over 3.6 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) were recorded in Ukraine in 2024. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, the number of IDPs increased sharply compared to 2021, when it stood at 854,000. Moreover, the figures rose by approximately one million IDPs in 2015. A year prior, Russia-backed separatists started fighting with the Armed Forces of Ukraine in eastern Ukraine and Russia annexed Crimea and Sevastopol.
