In India, there has been an increasing focus on so-called Hindu nationalism in recent years, particularly since the Bharatiya Janata Party assumed power in 2014. A survey conducted just before the outbreak of COVID-19 found that nearly ** percent of Hindus found it very important to be able to speak Hindi in order to be truly Indian. More than half of the responding Jains had the same opinion. On the other hand, below ** percent of Christians and Sikhs said the same.
