In India, there has been an increasing focus on so-called Hindu nationalism in recent years, particularly since the Bharatiya Janata Party assumed power in 2014. A survey conducted just before the outbreak of COVID-19 indeed found that nearly *** thirds of the surveyed Hindus were of the opinion that it is very important to be Hindu in order to be truly Indian. Among all the other religious groups, less than half of the respondents shared the same opinion.
