The NextGenerationEU economic stimulus plan was created by the European Union institutions and member states following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The plan aims to stimulate the European economy over the period from 2021-2027, with a particular focus on invetsments in the green transition, digital transformation, and institutional development.
As of December 2022, EU citizens' awareness of the plans differ widely between different member states, with states who will receive greater support from the packages, such as Portugal, Italy, and Spain, showing much higher levels of awareness. Countries such as Sweden, Germany, and Austria, who will receive comparatively small amounts of funds from the NextGenEU packages, have much lower shares of their citizens reporting being aware of the plans. Sweden and Latvia are the only two member states to have more citizens saying they are unaware of the plans than aware.
