At the end of May 2022, shortly before the first round of the French parliamentary elections, nearly two-thirds of citizens surveyed expressed the wish that the opposition would represent the majority of deputies in the National Assembly and impose a cohabitation on Emmanuel Macron after the elections. This wish was more widely shared by French people between 25 and 34 years old, but less present among those over 65 years old, who were more likely to consider, on the contrary, that the President having a majority of deputies in the Assembly would be a good thing.
Cohabitation is a political situation in which the President of the Republic and the majority of the deputies are of opposite political tendencies. In France, the last cohabitation took place under the Chirac-Jospin government, between 1997 and 2002.
