The majority of Japanese consumers planned to eat traditional New Year's food (o-sechi) as revealed in a survey conducted in October 2021. While more than ** percent of respondents aged 60 years and older planned to eat traditional dishes at the beginning of the year, the share was lower among younger respondents.
O-sechi refers to a variety of assorted dishes eaten during the New Year's holiday. The dishes are arranged in stackable boxes, with each representing a special meaning like "health for the upcoming year", "joy", and "longevity".
