The Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) of online sports betting in Italy rose significantly from March 2020 to June 2021. In April 2020, the GGR of online sports betting added up to nearly ** million euros, declining from over ** million euros in the previous month. The sharp drop was likely due to emergency restrictions put in place during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as all sporting events were canceled or rescheduled during the national lockdown implemented in March. As the lockdown was gradually lifted in May, sports events restarted. Thus, the GGR bounced back in June 2020, and increased further during the next year, peaking at nearly *** million euros in May 2021. As of June 2021, the Gross Gaming Revenue of sports betting in Italy amounted to *** million euros.
